Guimarães is one of the most important historical cities in Portugal, where significant events of great importance for the formation of the country took place. It is in Guimarães, with the victory of D. Afonso Henriques in the Battle of São Mamede, on 24th June, 1128, that the first page of the history of Portugal was written. The inscription "Aqui nasceu Portugal" (Portugal was born here) can be found engraved on one of the towers of the old city walls. The city's origins date back to the 10th century, when the medieval city was called the Vimaranes, before the constitution of the country. It is in this century that the Countess Mumadona Vias ordered the construction of a monastery and later the Castle, where allegedly would be born in 1111 the first King of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques. In 1128 happened near Guimarães the battle of S. Mamede, where D. Afonso Henriques emerged victorious against the kingdom of Leon, thus achieving the freedom for the creation of the Portugal kingdom. In 1853, Guimarães was elevated to the category of city and in the end of the 19th century experience large changes in the city center. This revitalization of the historic center, together with its essential role in the country foundation and diverse architectural representation led UNESCO to declare it a World Heritage Site in 2001. The historical center still preserves a harmonious evolution of a medieval village to a modern city, preserving in excellent conditions an architectural set of important heritage value. It is at this center that are most of the restaurants, bars, galleries and shops in the city and where every day the city's youth gather to cheer the streets and squares. Stroll in this streets is breathing history and reviving medieval times. Get to know also the Baixo Minho, region where Guimarães is located, to observe the most beautiful landscapes where the green stretches over land, covering the hills with large pine trees and the valleys with high vineyards.
