Guimarães is one of the most important historical cities in Portugal, where significant events of great importance for the formation of the country took place. It is in Guimarães, with the victory of D. Afonso Henriques in the Battle of São Mamede, on 24^th June, 1128, that the first page of the history of Portugal was written. The inscription "Aqui nasceu Portugal" (Portugal was born here) can be found engraved on one of the towers of the old city walls. The city's origins date back to the 10^th century, when the medieval city was called the Vimaranes, before the constitution of the country. It is in this century that the Countess Mumadona Vias ordered the construction of a monastery and later the Castle, where allegedly would be born in 1111 the first King of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques. In 1128 happened near Guimarães the battle of S. Mamede, where D. Afonso Henriques emerged victorious against the kingdom of Leon, thus achieving the freedom for the creation of the Portugal kingdom. In 1853, Guimarães was elevated to the category of city and in the end of the 19^th century experience large changes in the city center. This revitalization of the historic center, together with its essential role in the country foundation and diverse architectural representation led UNESCO to declare it a World Heritage Site in 2001.
