On the right side of Sado River, the city spreads over a small hill, guarded by the castle that stands in a dominant position at the top of the hill. Alcácer do Sal is a town inhabited since very ancient times, with archaeological remains dating back to the Neolithic period, and evidences of the passage of Greeks, Phoenicians and other peoples of the Mediterranean basin. Since the early days of the occupation of man, fishing and exploring salt were the main sources of livelihood of its inhabitants, exceeded only by rice cultivation in the mid-19^th century. During the times of the Roman occupation, the city had enough relevance in the industrial sector due to its privileged location on the Sado River’s margins, near its mouth, facilitating the flow of goods from the interior (such as wheat, oil and wine) to other Mediterranean cities of the Roman Empire. For many years was one of the most important inland port cities in the Iberian Peninsula, known for the manufacture of salt and related industries of salting and fish paste.

Over the Sado River calm waters, the city mirrors the white of the houses that flank the entire marginal, allowing relaxing walks along the river just disturbed by the melodious twittering of birds that live there.
