Fátima city, known as an important religious center for the Catholic world, is located in the Santarém district, about 130km (81 miles) north of Lisbon. Surrounded by the landscapes of the Aire and Candeeiros Mountains hosts at its center the Sanctuary of Fátima, a place of pilgrimage and prayer of thousands of people from all over the world. This place became famous for the apparitions of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima allegedly witnessed by three shepherd children, Lúcia, Francisco and Jacinta, in the months from May to October of 1917. The last appearance on 13 October 1917, joined about 70,000 people who gathered to watch the final appearance. While people were praying, Our Lady of Fátima appeared and happened the "Miracle of the Sun", the heavy rain that was falling at that moment stopped and the sun came appearing to swift rapidly like a fireball. Since then Fátima is an important pilgrimage place, transforming the city into one of the most popular destinations in Portugal, attracting thousands of faithful and curious visitors from around the world.

Every year on 13th May and 13th October, thousands of pilgrims travel miles and come to Fátima to fulfil promises made to Our Lady of Fátima or simply to enjoy the strong energy of the place. To visit Fátima is to get to know a place of worship and faith, where in addition to the Sanctuary you can get to know other religious monuments and enjoy the local shops.
